I just saw the new Carrie movie and it just sucks !
After the first feature cult film from Brian De Palma, a pseudo-sequel and a TV movie, here comes a new film selled as a new adaptation rather than just another remake which then contained some differences with the original book from Stephen King. It’s therefore hoped a real reinterpretation of the epistolary novel which then offered a different narrative structure consisting of various testimonies interspersed with newspaper clippings chronicling the various supernatural events that occurred in the city. But Hollywood is a bitch that played with us once again…
Carrie 2013 is ultimately a vulgar remake that, despite its successful special effects and some changes in the story, brings nothing more. And adding real names of some characters and details about the birth of Carrie is not enough to be a “new, more faithful adaptation” as the film crew had proclaimed. I would have preferred to see something more than a unnecessary redesign packed with CGIs. And if Kimberly Peirce can easily film some sitcom teenage problems, creating a scary atmosphere and genuine suspense is a different story and the director of Boys Don’t Cry fails with success. For example, Carrie’s powers are revealed too early in the story and are evaporating any tension until the final certainly well done but once again far from the memorable butchery in the ‘76 film.
Finally, I can say this new film is certainly a new adaptation in the background but an aesthetically clean remake in the form, forgetting to scare and prefering to focus on dogs effects that will age very quickly. I don’t forget to praise Julianne Moore’s interpretation, perfect in the terrifying fanatic mother, but overall the movie proves undoubtedly its uselessness and becomes therefore dispensable, forcing us to re-watch the masterpiece by Brian De Palma which remains timeless. Hollywood, stahp !
